A mountain rescue team is appealing for help from walkers willing to step out to raise funds for its volunteers.

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team’s sponsored walk will take place in June in Glen Feshie on the western side of the Cairngorms and the team is hoping 500 walkers will tackle the 30km (19-mile) route.

A spokesperson for the team said: “This year’s walk enjoys a circular route; initially climbing through woodland and then descending into the glen with spectacular views across the Mòine Mhòr to the high munro tops of Braeriach and Cairn Toul.

“Our route then passes close by the big estate house and then rises up on a good track to the West of the glen into open heather moorland.

“Finally, the route swings back to the north passing remains of civilisations gone by, arriving back at our starting point Corarnstilbeg. The distance of our route this year is 30km, with a height gain of approx 550m.”

So far, fewer than 200 people have registered for the walk.

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team has 43 unpaid volunteer team members and covers the Drumochter Hills, the Ben Alder Massif, Ardverikie Wall on Binnein Shuas, Craig Dhubh at Newtonmore, the Monadhliath Mountains over to Loch Ness, the northern Cairngorms including the climbing areas of the Loch Avon basin such as the Shelter Stone Crag, Hells Lum, Stag Rocks, and the moors up towards the Moray Coast and north as far as Inverness.

The team said its members are mountaineers themselves and therefore understand fully the attractions of the wild and beautiful environment, which the mountains can provide.

Cost of entry to the sponsored walk is £15 for adults and £10 for under-17s. Details of how to register and sponsor forms are on the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team website.
