A route used by walkers to access four munros has been reopened.

Highland Council has reopened the crossing over the River Spean after a new bridge was installed at Inverlair. The closure of the bridge, leading to the hamlet of Fersit, near Roy Bridge, to road traffic affected walkers wanting to park their cars in the area before heading to the hills.

Ian Douglas, senior engineer with the council, said the new bridge is now in place and the road open.

However, he added: “Work will be continuing for a few weeks yet to complete the works so there may be occasional traffic hold-ups. I hope the works have not inconvenienced [walkers] too much.”

Fersit lies about 3½km (miles) off the main A86 road and is the base for routes up the munros of Chno Dearg, Stob Coire Sgriodain, Stob a’ Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain.

The bridge was closed on 25 February. A small car park was provided for residents north of the bridge works, along with a shuttle bus service, but the parking was not available for visitors, who were warned to make other arrangements.

A footbridge maintained access on foot to the Fersit road.
