The MCofS winter lectures are aimed at increasing mountain safety awareness

More than 900 people are better informed about mountain safety after attending one of a series of free lectures.

The 21 free talks were put on by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland at various venues at which 935 people were able to listen to experts in the field of safety on the hills.

MCofS Mountain safety adviser Heather Morning said: “The winter lecture series was a great success this year, with record numbers attending the talks.

“It’s great that 935 hillwalkers and climbers, both members and non-members of MCofS, now have a greater understanding of winter mountain safety as a direct result of these lectures. With the winter lectures over we are now focusing on the spring and summer courses, and are confident that all these courses will fill up fast.”

Chief Officer David Gibson said: “MCofS safety lectures and courses provide a real contribution to increasing awareness of mountain safety. It’s great to see so many people attending our events and seeking to improve their skill levels.”

The council is also running paid-for courses through spring and summer with a mountain safety theme, ranging from one-day navigation and GPS training right up to Summer Mountain Leader Award courses.

The courses run from May until September and more details can be seen on the MCofS website. Further information can also obtained by ringing Heather Morning on 01479 861 241or by emailing her.
