Pen-y-ghent, final peak on the walker's route

Pen-y-ghent, final peak on the walker's route

A walker was rescued after suffering from exhaustion while attempting the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.

The Cave Rescue Organisation was called to help the 63-year-old man on Saturday at 7.40pm when he collapsed after summiting the final mountain on his route.

The walker had started out on the 39km (24-mile) route from Ribblehead and had already successfully reached the top of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent when he succumbed to exhaustion on the final leg at Red Moss, between Pen-y-ghent and Birkwith.

A spokesperson for the Clapham-based volunteer rescue organisation, which operates both on the Dales fells and in the caves and potholes of the area, said: “CRO attended and the casualty was assisted down to team vehicles on the Pennine Way track and brought off the hill.”

The team was also called to help Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team at 10am on Sunday after a mountain biker fell and suffered an injured leg while on a trail near Whelp Stone Crag in Gisburn Forest, Lancashire.

The CRO spokesperson said: “The casualty was evacuated by air ambulance and both teams stood down just prior to CRO arrival on scene.”
