Walkers are being warned not to leave valuables in their cars, following thefts from vehicles in the Hadrian’s Wall area.

Visitors to Northumberland had items stolen from the boots of their cars after they were targeted by criminals.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Constabulary said: “Between 4.30pm and 5pm on Wednesday, 18 May, thieves smashed the window of a car at Brunton Turret in Chollerford. Although nothing of value was left on show in the vehicle the thieves got into the boot and stole personal belongings.

“Between 3pm and 6pm the same day, thieves also broke into a car parked near Housesteads Fort in Bardon Mill. Again they targeted the boot of the vehicle and stole bags from inside.

“Police are keeping an open mind on whether the crimes are linked but are appealing for motorists to remove all valuables from their vehicles when leaving them parked up, especially in more rural areas of Northumberland.”

Police are asking walkers in the area to contact them immediately if they see any suspicious behaviour.

West Tynedale Neighbourhood Inspector Dave Thornhill said: “The two cars targeted were visitors to the area and I’d appeal for anyone who was in the Housesteads or Chollerford areas on Wednesday and who saw anyone acting suspiciously to contact police with any information.

“I’d also urge all motorists in the area to take anything of value out of their car when they leave it and to not leave anything on show.”

Police are also not ruling out the thefts being linked to three similar car break-ins in Howick, Druridge Bay and Embleton on Thursday 19 May.

Car parks in the area are being patrolled by police officers, who are also visiting tourist centres and other visitor points along Hadrian’s Wall and giving crime prevention advice and raising awareness of the recent crimes.

Anyone with any information can contact police in the area on 03456 043 043 extension 69191 or by ringing 999 in an emergency.
