A mountain biker was rescued after getting lost on one of the Peak District’s highest fells.

Three mountain rescue teams were involved in the search for the man who was reported missing on Bleaklow.

The Glossop team was alerted about 10.30pm on Saturday and mounted a search for the man, who was reported to have set off from Torside on the north of the fell, heading to the Snake Pass, via Bleaklow Head.

In worsening weather, the Kinder and Woodhead teams were called out to look for the biker on the hill, which is notoriously difficult to navigate in poor visibility.

Three search dogs and their handlers also joined the hunt for the man amid growing concerns for the mountain biker on a cold, windy night.

A member of the Woodhead MRT found the biker at 3.30am near Torside Castle, north-west of the summit at Bleaklow Head. A spokesperson for the Woodhead team said he was cold and wet but otherwise uninjured and in high spirits.

He was taken by Woodhead MRT to Glossop police station for a debrief by the Glossop team.

Woodhead team leader Keith Wakeley said: “A good combination of search planning and management on our arrival, as well as local knowledge and operational experience lead to a rapid conclusion to the search – a great team effort and a job well done.”

The following day, rescuers from Woodhead went back on to Bleaklow, the second highest fell in the Peak District, and retrieved the man’s bike.
