A party of walkers on Wales’s highest mountain were rescued after getting lost in thick cloud on steep ground.
A search dog found the group of three this evening on a ledge on Y Lliwedd and they were brought to safety by mountain rescuers. The ridge lies south-east of Snowdon’s 1,085m (3,560ft) summit.
The walkers had set off heading for Snowdon up the Watkin path when they got lost on the south side of Y Lliwedd, which rises to 898m (2,926ft).
Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team was called out to help the walkers and Helen Howe of Search and Rescue Dogs Association Wales and her dog Cluanie joined five Llanberis team members in the search for the party.
Rob Johnson, press officer for Sarda Wales, said: “Cluanie found the party stuck on a ledge above a steep drop and returned to Helen and the rest of the team to indicate her find.
“She then took the team into the grateful walkers who were brought safely off the mountain by the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team.
“It was pretty grim weather which meant that the helicopter was unable to fly. The missing walkers had been able to give an approximate location from their mobile phone and then Cluanie did the rest.
“The added speed of a search dog team meant that the walkers avoided hypothermia in some pretty foul conditions.”
