Jim Webster, who easily surpassed his 260-mile target

A member of a volunteer rescue team cycled more than 350 miles (563km) to raise funds for his team.

Jim Webster set himself a target of getting north of Manchester in 24 hours after setting off from Torquay, but actually reached the edge of the Lake District.

Cash raised from the trip will go to the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team in Ashburton, which carries out rescues in south Dartmoor.

Alan Pewsey of the team said: “Over the 24-hour period Jim cycled an amazing 353.2 miles [568km], averaging 16.6mph, despite high winds – blowing against him for much of the way – and heavy rain.

“The route led Jim from his workplace at Torbay hospital to the Shap Pass in the Lake District.”

The effort easily broke his original target of 260 miles.

The team is part of the Dartmoor Rescue Group, which was established in 1968. The Ashburton group covers the higher areas of Dartmoor and towards the fringes of the Devon coast and counts among its members electronics engineers, accident and emergency staff and social-care workers.
