A group of climbers recently rescued during an all-night operation in north Wales was among more than 100 competitors who joined in a gruelling challenge event to raise funds for their rescuers.

The Oggie 8 is an annual fundraiser across eight 3,000ft peaks in Snowdonia in aid of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation.

Saturday’s event was won in a record time of by the C’est la Vie team. 125 competitors from 25 teams set off at 7am to tackle the Carneddau, Yr Elen, Pen yr Ole Wen,Y Garn, the Glyderau and Tryfan.

Chris Lloyd of the rescue team said: “The teams, some from as far away as Exeter and others recently rescued from Craig yr Ysfa in an all night operation, made good progress.

“Last year’s wining team was on top form passing Carnedd Dafydd and Pen yr Ole Wen and down to Idwal car park, while some groups were just leaving Yr Elen.

“As the bulk of the groups descended into the Ogwen Valley, the clouds were engulfing the tops of the Glyders and the wining team C’est la Vie was arriving at Oggi Base having completed the course in a record time of 5hrs 40 min.

“Meanwhile undeterred, the teams ventured in heavy showers over Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach and finally Tryfan to complete the Oggi 8. Each was presented with a complimentary beer – or cup of tea.”
