The GriGri 2

The importers of climbing equipment that was found to have a defect have issued a reminder to users to have the faulty equipment replaced.

Cumbria-based Lyon Equipment says it want to make sure users of the GriGri 2 belay device are aware of the need to exchange their potentially dangerous gear for modified type.

The Petzl belaying device was found in June to be susceptible to damage if excessive force was used on the braking handle, causing it to lock open.

Lyon Equipment issued instructions for exchange for UK users of the belay device, but is again appealing for climbers to check their gear and return it for replacement if one of the affected models.

Lyon customer relations manager Roger Chaldecott said: “It’s gone really well and we’ve received loads of GriGri 2s back and exchanged them, are very pleased with the percentage achieved, but want to remind the consumers by a ‘refreshed’ mention of this.

New models of the GriGri 2 are now hitting the shops, and Mr Chaldecott added: “Please check your serial number. If the unique identification number is higher than 11137 don’t send it back as it’s already the improved design.”

The defect does not affect the original GriGri model, only the GriGri 2.

Mr Chaldecott also said the company had received for exchange two GriGri 2s that did not have the users’ return address. He appealed for the two climbers in to get in touch with the company.

He said: “If you sent yours back and haven’t received a replacement then write to us saying when you sent it, what colour, and describing the packaging. If by some miracle you know the number that would be even better.”

The company has reissued a factsheet on the recall and reminds anyone with an affected GriGri 2 that has not been replaced that it should not be used.
