A walker was airlifted to hospital after a fall down a steep slope.

The man suffered injuries to his chest and ribs in the incident on an bank near Llyn y Fan Fach in the Black Mountain in south Wales.

An RAF Sea King helicopter from RMB Chivenor went to the man’s aid, along with members of the Central Beacons and Brecon Mountain Rescue Teams on Saturday. He was flown to Morriston Hospital in Swansea after rescuers were airlifted by the crew to the site in the West of the Brecon Beacons national park.

Members of the mountain rescue teams then walked the rest of the man’s party off the hill.

The Central Beacons team were already on the hills, providing cover for the Mountain Trail Challenge, a 48km (30-mile) event in the national park.

Two team members also supported walkers from the Dolen Cymru charity who were tackling Pen y Fan as part of the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge.

Central Beacons MRT members finally stood down at 2am on Sunday, almost 21 hours after starting their duties.
