The eBay auction boasts the '4x4 that drove up Snowdon Mountain'

The man whose 4×4 caused a furore when it was discovered near the top of Wales’s highest mountain has put the vehicle up for auction on eBay, with proceeds going to mountain rescue.

Craig Williams’s maroon pickup has so far attracted a top bid of £1,320 on the internet auction site.

The pickup is advertised as: ‘The Vauxhall Frontera 4×4 that drove to the top of Mount Snowdon’.

Mr Williams, of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, describes himself as freelance vehicle recoverer and the 1994 pickup is being auctioned under the name CW Transport.

The 39-year-old says on eBay: “All the proceeds go directly to charity. Please tell all your friends.

“The charity is the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation. These are the people that risk their own lives to rescue others in danger 24 hours a day, and they are a team of volunteers.

“Not having any expenditure or resources other than their own, they would appreciate any amount Trusty makes.

“You could be the winning bidder of this world-media-covered little legend all of its own.”

The pickup comes with 98,000 miles on the clock and comes with snowplough and gritter if required.

So far, 26 bids have been received in the auction, which ends next Monday. The Frontera’s owner has offered to donate half the proceeds of the sale to Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, in whose area Snowdon lies.

  • Mr Williams has been charged with dangerous driving after the incident on the 1,085m (3,560ft) mountain, and is due to appear before Caernarfon Magistrates on 7 October.
