Rescuers have issued a final invitation for walkers to tackle their annual challenge this weekend.

The Grin ‘n’ Bear It event offers walkers and runners the chance to test their stamina and navigation skills on the hills and moorland of Yorkshire and the Peak District.

Cash from the event helps swell the coffers of the volunteer Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team.

The longest route is 37km (23 miles) but for less gung-ho competitors, there is a 7¼km (4½-mile) family walk. There is also a runners’ route and a short-walk course.

Route finding skills using route description, map and compass in poor weather conditions are essential for the longer routes, organisers said. Appropriate clothing and footwear are required, and if the weather forecast holds, sun cream may well be necessary, with temperatures due to rise into the mid 20s. Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome.

The challenge starts at the Crow Edge Community Centre, south of Holmfirth near Huddersfield, grid reference SE 180 051, on Saturday 1 October. Entry fee is £10 donation in advance or £12 on the day. Anyone raising £30 or more for the team will get free entry.

This year’s Grin ‘n’ Bear It will be the ninth running of the event. A free hot meal and drinks are also provided to finishers.

Details and entry information are on the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team website.
