Runners set off on the event

Runners, walkers and climbers raised more than £6,000 for a mountain rescue team in a race across the Peak District.

The annual Nine Edges Endurance Challenge pits outdoors enthusiasts’ stamina and skill on a 20-mile course taking in nine of the area’s gritstone climbing crags.

The first runner Richard Kemp completed the course in a record time ending at the Robin Hood pub in Baslow 2hrs 41mins after setting off from Fairholmes on the shore of Ladybower Reservoir.

Proceeds from the event, so far totalling £6,100, will swell the coffers of the Edale Mountain Rescue Team, with more sponsorship money still to come.

The event takes in Derwent, Stanage, Burbage North and South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardoms and Birchen Edges, with climbing optional. There is a total of 900m of ascent for competitors.

Stephen Hargreaves was just a minute behind the winner, with third place man Steve Canning a further minute down. Fastest woman was veteran Rachel Nolan, with a time of 3hrs 13mins.
