Two volunteer mountain rescue teams were involved in the rescue of a woman who fell while on England’s highest peak.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 2.45pm on Thursday after a walker raised the alarm by walking down to Wasdale Head to report one of his companions had injured herself on the Corridor Route below Scafell Pike.

The woman suffered a broken shoulder when she tumbled on the route up the 978m (3,209ft) mountain.

Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team joined 14 Wasdale colleagues in an operation lasting 5½ hours.

A spokesperson for the Wasdale team said: “When the team arrived at the Corridor Route the casualty was not in the reported location and given the very strong winds and frequent showers we suspected that she would be trying to walk down to the valley.

“While searching all the possible descent routes the casualty and the remaining member of her group were spotted a couple of hundred metres below the corridor route, before Skew Gill.

“A team doctor gave the casualty analgesia for her shoulder which was then strapped up for the stretcher carry down to Burnthwaite.

“We reached the vehicles just as it was getting dark and were grateful for the assistance of Duddon and Furness Team who provided extra manpower.”

It was the 60th callout this year for Wasdale MRT.
