Rough Crag, scene of the rescue

A walker was airlifted from a Lakeland fell after slipping and injuring herself.

The 61-year-old from Kendal fell on Rough Crag above Mardale Head and suffered injuries to her head and hip.

The Cumbria Air Ambulance flew to the scene but low cloud prevented it evacuating the walker from the site. A paramedic from the helicopter was able to tend to the woman and Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was alerted.

Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team joined colleagues from Penrith in the rescue and a Sea King helicopter was requested and flew from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland.

A spokesperson for the Penrith team said: “The Sea King was able to winch the casualty aboard just as members of the team arrived on scene.

“The remaining members of the casualty’s party were evacuated by Sea King and the casualty taken to Carlisle Infirmary.”

Fifteen members of Penrith MRT were involved for in the rescue for four hours along with 13 members of Kirkby Stephen MRT.
