Skiers in the Lake District will no longer have to cross their legs to avoid the call of nature.

Members of the Lake District Ski Club are celebrating the opening of what they believe is England’s second-highest flushing toilet.

The facility, dubbed the Powder Room, sits 750m (2,461ft) up on the flanks of Raise in the Helvellyn range. Only the toilet at the air traffic radome buildings on Great Dun Fell in the northern Pennines is higher, members believe.

The new loo includes a urinal and sit-down toilet and is adjacent to the club’s stone- and cedar-clad hut, which is roofed with slate.

Members lugged a septic tank and all the other necessities up the mountainside from the Greenside road above Glenridding over the summer and the ski club members spent more than 300 hours constructing the loo with a view.

The opening of the toilet marks the 75th anniversary of the club. A plaque on the gable of the building says: “Constructed by members during the atrocious summer of 2011 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Lake District Ski Club.”

The club’s button tows and ski runs are suitable for intermediate and experienced skiers and boarders. More details can be found on the Lake District Ski Club website.
