Police have named the teenager whose body was found on Scafell Pike.

Lee Jones, 19, of Derbyshire, became separated from his friend on the descent from England’s highest mountain on Friday.

He was last seen near the summit of the 978m (3,209ft) fell about 3pm, in poor weather and bad visibility.

Members of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, Duddon & Furness Mountain Team and animals and handlers from Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs mounted a major operation on the mountain that evening, but the search was called off at 11.15pm. An RAF mountain rescue team also joined the search.

The search resumed at 8am on Saturday with help from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from HMS Gannet in Ayrshire and Mr Jones’s body was found by rescuers in Piers Gill.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The man’s family has been informed.
