A man was airlifted from a fell after collapsing while out hillwalking in the Lake District.

The 51-year-old was on Ullock Pike yesterday, Thursday, when he became unwell on the fell, west of Skiddaw.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 1.40pm and immediately requested the help of both an air ambulance and an RAF Sea King helicopter.

Variable cloud prevented the air ambulance getting close to the casualty, but an ambulance paramedic joined team members who reached the man on foot.

He was treated at the scene and then stretchered down the ridge towards Bassenthwaite Lake in a three-hour operation involving 22 members of the volunteer team.

The walker was taken to a site where the helicopter, from RAF Valley on Anglesey, was able to pick him up and he was flown to Furness General Hospital in Barrow for further treatment.
