A royal wedding gift was put to good use to rescue a walker as jubilee celebrations were going on across the country.

The Land Rover given to Prince William and Kate Middleton as a wedding present was passed on to Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, which used it yesterday to go to the aid of an injured walker.

The woman slipped and injured her ankle on Whiteside Bank on the Helvellyn range on Sunday afternoon.

The 65-year-old, who was on holiday from Hamburg, Germany, was walking with her family when she slipped.

A spokesperson for the volunteer team said: “She initially tried to continue walking down into the valley, but eventually found that she was unable to continue.”

Ten Patterdale MRT members went to the walker’s aid after being alerted by police and team members found her at the top of the track leading down the side of Keppel Cove.

The team treated her at the scene, splinted her leg and stretchered her down the fell to the waiting Land Rover, which drove her down the fell track to the valley bottom.

The prince is familiar with the scene of the rescue as he joined Patterdale MRT members and other Lake District mountain rescuers during an ascent of Helvellyn in 2009 in his capacity as patron of Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
