A major fundraising challenge event has been postponed because heavy rain has left the route waterlogged.

The annual British Heart Foundation Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge was due this year to take place next Saturday.

The event attracts large numbers of walkers attempting to walk Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in 12 hours or less to raise cash for the charity.

But organisers announced the 39km (24-mile) challenge has had to be put back to September.

A spokesperson said: “We’re extremely sorry that we have had to make this call.

“Due to heavy rainfall and flooding in the area, many parts of the route have become unsafe and waterlogged.

“We hope that people will join us for the new date in September and help us to raise vital funds for our life-saving work.”

The British Heart Foundation event will now take place on 23 September.
