Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by police about 4.10pm and made its way to the site below Arthur’s Pike where the pilot had crashed on Whinny Crag.

A Patterdale MRT spokesperson said: “The team secured the area and prepared the casualty for a stretcher lift into an RAF Sea King.”

A helicopter crew from RAF Leconfield took the man on board and airlifted him to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.
