Fairfield, scene of the rescue

A teenager was airlifted from a Lakeland mountain today after hitting his head while on an outdoor course.

The 17-year-old from Exeter was with a group on Fairfield when he tripped and suffered the injury.

The youth complained of blurred vision and reduced consciousness after the incident, so a member of the group rang 999 from the scene near the summit of the 873m (2,864ft) fell.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 11.20am today and joined Langdale Ambleside MRT in making their way to the summit from Patterdale and Dunmail Raise respectively.

A Patterdale team spokesperson said: “The casualty was treated at the scene by mountain rescue personnel, placed in a spinal vacuum mattress and loaded on to a stretcher and then airlifted to West Cumberland Hospital [in Whitehaven] by a Sea King helicopter from [HMS Gannet], Prestwick.”

A total of 24 rescuers took part in the operation, 13 from Patterdale and 11 from Langdale Ambleside.
