A walker was airlifted from a Lake District fell when she injured herself while tackling the Coast to Coast path.

The woman and her partner were on Kidsty Pike above Mardale yesterday when she slipped and injured her ankle.

Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 12.35pm and 15 team members went to the site above Haweswater. The Penrith volunteers requested help from Kirkby Stephen MRT and 13 members of that team joined the rescue, along with an RAF Sea King helicopter from Valley on Anglesey.

A Penrith MRT spokesperson said the walkers, who were both doctors, were well equipped for the conditions.

The spokesperson said: “The Sea King flew from a previous callout with Keswick MRT in Borrowdale and despite the poor weather conditions, was able to land a few hundred metres below the casualty, who having been treated by the team, and was then stretchered to the waiting helicopter.”

The injured woman was then flown to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.

The rescue operation lasted 6½ hours.
