A family was rescued after getting lost on a Lakeland fell in darkness.

The three walkers were on the fells above Great Langdale yesterday when they called for help after getting benighted.

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 7.50pm and mounted a search on Raw Pike for the family, who were attempting a route from Grasmere to Great Langdale.

A spokesperson for the team said: “They were quickly located using technological voodoo and escorted of the fell.”

The previous day, 14 members of the team were called out after a woman was reported missing on Helm Crag above Grasmere as darkness fell.

The team was alerted about 6.30pm and was joined by a search dog handler.

A spokesperson said: “A young woman and an older auntie went for what should have been a short walk, but a navigational error changed all that.

“The older woman started to struggle and with darkness approaching the younger woman left her to seek help.

“A search was organised and team members where being deployed when the woman was found by a local man who had gone out to ‘have a quick look’.”

The man who found the woman between Helm Crag and Gibson Knott was living in the house from which the alarm was raised.
