Pillar Rock, with the Slab and Notch route running up just right of centre

A climber was winched from a Lake District fell after injuring himself when his knee got stuck.

A father and son spent an hour extricating the younger climber from a crack on Pillar Rock overlooking Ennerdale.

The incident happened on the second pitch of the Slab and Notch route on the rock.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 6.30pm today and the volunteer rescuers made their way to the site, to find the pair had managed to make their way to the base of the climb.

A Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer winched the climber from the site on the fell and flew him to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.

Slab and Notch is a grade-three scramble or Moderate rockclimb on Pillar Rock, 700m (2,297ft) up on the north side of Pillar.
