Police have named the walker who died after falling from Scafell on Monday.

James Kirk Blackburn of Darrington, West Yorkshire, fell 600ft from the Lord’s Rake traverse.

Members of Wasdale and Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Teams went to the 53-year-old walker’s aid and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland also flew to the scene.

A Cumbria Constabulary spokesperson said: “Sadly, Mr Blackburn was pronounced dead on scene.

“The emergency responders also attended to the man Mr Blackburn was walking with, a 64-year-old man from the Nottingham area, who was suffering from shock and the effects of the cold.

“The 64-year-old man was airlifted to West Cumberland Hospital [in Whitehaven] for treatment. However he was discharged later that afternoon.

“Initial enquiries suggest there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The coroner has been informed.”
