Stumped for what Christmas present to buy the person who has it all?

How about getting them sponsorship of a vital weather service that relies on two men summiting England’s third highest mountain every day?

For as little as £25, individuals can sponsor the Lake District Weatherline, whose two felltop assessors make the trip to the top of Helvellyn each day in winter to provide real reports on weather and terrain conditions.

Corporate bodies are also being offered the chance to sponsor the Weatherline for £50.

Cash from the sponsorship will help support Jon Bennett and Jason Taylor, who provide the felltop reports for the Lake District National Park Authority.

Information services team leader Andrew Robbins said: “Money raised through this initiative will help towards funding the continuation of the felltop assessors’ service and to maintain winter safety on the fells.

“We think this sponsorship opportunity will inspire and excite the thousands of loyal people who use the Weatherline service every day – and it could also make an ideal birthday or Christmas gift.”

The authority said this winter’s service, which runs daily – including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – will be even better and faster with new technology allowing Mr Bennett and Mr Taylor to post their reports and pictures online as soon as they have returned from the mountain top.

“This should ensure that today’s conditions are available on the website from mid-afternoon instead of the previous ‘overnight’ facility,” a spokesperson said.

Weatherline is available online and by phone on 0844 846 2444.
