The body of a missing walker has been found in the Cairngorms.

The man’s body was found near Jacob’s Ladder in Coire an t-Sneachda, in Cairn Gorm’s Northern Corries today.

Five others who were missing were found uninjured near Carn Tarsuinn, 10km (6 miles) away.

The walkers were found by members of Braemar Mountain Rescue Team at 12.10 following a huge search that began yesterday evening and resumed this morning.

More than 100 mountain rescue team members from across the UK took part in the search for the six missing walkers, from Leeds University.

Police said the five walkers were found near the 759m (2,490ft) mountain, north-east of Coire an t-Sneachda.

A Northern Constabulary spokesperson said: “Shortly afterwards the body of a male was recovered in the Jacob’s Ladder area of the Cairngorms.

“There has been no formal identification at this time, however, there are currently no other outstanding missing people in the area.

“The five walkers are safe and not injured and have been taken by helicopter to the Aviemore area. Police inquiries into the incident are continuing.

“The walkers were part of a large group of 35 people who were visiting the Highlands. They are either from or connected to Leeds University.”

Members of Cairngorm, Dundonnell, Braemar, RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Leuchars, RAF Leeming, Police Service of Northern Ireland Mountain Rescue Teams were joined by volunteers from the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs and Search and Rescue Dogs Association members and animals.

A Northern Constabulary spokesperson added: “Police can confirm that the immediate next of kin of the man who sadly died in the Cairngorms earlier today have been informed.

“The family has asked that no further information is issued until they have had time to inform other family members.”

A report will be prepared for the procurator fiscal, the spokesperson added.

The Leeds University Union Hiking Club had been due to listen to an address on Saturday evening by a member of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, an ex-hiking-club president.

Jacob’s Ladder is a grade one winter climb in the corrie. Four weeks ago, John Wooding died on the Aladdin’s Mirror route, another grade one climb, in Coire an t-Sneachda.
