A man was rescued after getting stuck in icy conditions on England’s highest mountain.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 2.20pm on Monday after the man called for help from a gully next to Pikes Crag on the western face of Scafell Pike.

Sixteen team members went to the man’s aid and climbed to where the man was stranded.

A team spokesperson said: “Once on scene the team secured the casualty and then lowered him to safer ground.”

The rescue lasted more than four hours and was the volunteer team’s eighth of the year.

Rescuers said the man was adequately equipped for the conditions but warned: “All the gullies on Scafell Pike are still full of deep hard snow.”
