The pack contains information for outdoor fans about the area around Orton and Tebay

Many walkers will have a fleeting acquaintance of Orton in Cumbria.

The village is on the route of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk, and feels more akin to the Yorkshire Dales, with its limestone scars, than the nearby Lake District.

But the residents of Orton and its neighbour Tebay would like outdoor fans to spend a bit more time exploring the countryside around their villages.

The Adventure Capital partnership and main sponsors ACTion with Communities have produced a pack to tempt walkers and cyclists to the area, which could soon become part of an expanded national park.

The area is bounded by the northern Howgills to the South; the M6 to the West, Orton Scar to the North and the upper reaches of the Eden Valley to the East, and offers outdoor enthusiasts an alternative to the honeypots of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.

The pack has leaflets detailing walks from Tebay, including 21km (13-mile) and 15km (9-mile) routes that take in Borrowdale, a lesser known eastern namesake of its Lakeland cousin.

From Orton, there are a shorter walk of 7km (5 miles) around Orton Scar and a 20km (12-mile) stretch over Great Asby Scar.

For cyclists, there is a 43km (27-mile) circuit from Orton via the quiet roads and lanes to the North, visiting Crosby Ravensworth and Appleby, or a less strenuous family ride of 18km (11 miles) in the countryside around the village.

ACTion with Communities has produced 5,000 of the packs, which come in water-resistant wallets. 500 were distributed at Orton Farmers’ Market and the rest will be available via local businesses and tourist information centres.

ACTion with Communities said the information will also appear on community websites shortly.
