An injured walker with a fear of flying had to be stretchered from a Lakeland fell because an air ambulance could not be used to airlift her.

The woman injured her ankle on the Coast to Coast Path route near Kidsty Pike on Friday.

Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 3.10pm and team members went to the site above Mardale. The air ambulance flew to the fell but could not be used.

Members of Kirkby Stephen MRT also helped in the 4½-hour rescue, which involved 20 mountain rescuers.

The walker was treated at the scene then stretchered her to a waiting ambulance at Mardale Head.

The team also helped Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team the following day after a walker injured herself on the path on the shore of Ullswater.
