The Wasdale team was called to two rescues on Scafell Pike

Walkers were rescued from England’s highest mountain in two separate incidents in the early hours.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 5am on Sunday after a Three Peaks Challenge walker suffered a suspected broken leg on Scafell Pike.

The woman was treated at the site on Brown Tongue and stretchered down from the mountain in an operation involving 13 team members and lasting 3½ hours.

She was then taken to a waiting ambulance in the valley.

A team spokesperson said: “While we were dealing with the incident a second call came in for a party of three who had been stuck on the mountain all night and just managed to get a mobile signal.

“Two team members diverted on to the new incident with a bivvy tent to find and stabilise the party who were by now quite cold and wet.”

The walkers were found near Rough Crag on the south-eastern slopes of the mountain.

The spokesperson said: “After the completion of the first incident the other team members brought warm clothing up the hill.

“The party were rewarmed and fed and after a change of clothes everyone was able to walk off back to Brackenclose via Broad Crag Col.”

The rescue took more than 5¾ hours.
