A walker was airlifted to hospital after breaking his ankle on a Lake District fell.

The 60-year-old from Preston in Lancashire was walking with his dogs near Grisedale Tarn today when the incident happened.

A nearby group of walkers went to help him and raised the alarm.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 1.25pm and an air ambulance also flew to the area had to land some distance from the injured man due to the steep terrain.

The crew of the helicopter treated the man at the scene and mountain rescuers then stretchered him and lowered him down a steep grassy slope to the waiting air ambulance.

A Patterdale MRT spokesperson said: “His dogs were walked off the fell by the people who raised the alarm and were reunited with the casualty’s wife at the team’s rescue base.”

The four-hour rescue involved 11 volunteer members of the mountain rescue team.
