The young caver was freed after getting stuck in underground at Ribblehead

A teenager had to be freed by rescuers after getting jammed in a cave in the Yorkshire Dales.

The 16-year-old boy was negotiating a side passage in Thistle Cave, Ribblehead, when he got his knee firmly lodged in a crack.

The Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation was called out shortly before 2pm today and used plugs and feathers to remove rocks where he was trapped.

Team members then helped him to the surface and he was given further medical checks before being taken from the moorside to his waiting vehicle at Ribblehead Viaduct.

Plugs and feathers are quarrymen’s tools, consisting of sets of wedges and shims normally used to split rocks.

Today’s incident was the second in Thistle Cave in less than three weeks involving teenagers jammed in rocks underground.

The CRO was called out earlier this month when a 13-year-old boy became trapped during a trip underground.

On that occasion, party leaders managed to free the caver before the CRO team arrived.
