A man was airlifted from a Lake District fell after suffering a head injury when he fell more than 160ft.

Passing walkers saw the man fall from about 50m at Thornhow End overlooking Patterdale this afternoon and raised the alarm.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 4.40pm and went to the site, at the north-eastern end of the St Sunday Crag ridge.

A doctor and paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance also went to the scene.

A Patterdale MRT spokesperson said: “The air ambulance lifted equipment and team members above the casualty site, but was unable to land close by.

“Given the man’s location and injuries a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from Prestwick kindly assisted with evacuation of the man to hospital in Carlisle.”
