Walkers will need to be prepared for poor visibility, heavy rain and high winds

Walkers heading for the hills on Sunday are being warned to expect heavy rain, storm-force winds and, in Scotland, snow on the tops.

A deep autumn low pressure area is developing in the Atlantic at the moment, which forecasters expect to move eastwards to centre on Scotland by Monday.

Gusts of up to 90mph can be expected, with the strongest winds in the early morning of Sunday.

A yellow warning for rain and wind has been issued by the Met Office for parts of Britain, and windchill is likely to be significant, the independent Mountain Weather Information Service said.

Meteorologists said a temperature of between on 4C and 9C can be expected at 900m, which will dip to about 2C by dusk and freezing by midnight.

The forecasters also said thunder is possible and low cloud will make for poor visibility on Britain’s hills.

The high winds will continue into Monday, with England, particularly northern areas, affected only slightly less than Scotland.

Wales will also be affected by high winds and the forecast for the UK is for continuing unsettled weather through the coming week.

Detailed mountain weather forecasts can be obtained from MWIS and the Met Office.
