A man was airlifted from a Lake District crag after suffering head injuries in a 30m (100ft) fall.

The 26-year-old fell from Auterstone Crag overlooking the eastern shore of Ullswater today.

Patterdale and Penrith Mountain Rescue Teams were called out about 5.30pm today after being alerted to the incident.

The man fell towards the path below Barton Fell.

A Patterdale MRT spokesperson said: “The casualty was treated on scene for head injuries before being lowered off the fell and transported by team vehicle to the air ambulance.

“The casualty was airlifted to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, shortly after 7pm for further assessment.”

The spokesperson said 15 Patterdale team members were involved and they worked closely with colleagues from the Penrith team and with the North West Ambulance Service.
