A walker was airlifted to hospital after suffering suspected spinal injuries in a fall in the Lake District.

The 61-year-old woman fell on a rock step on the lakeshore path around Buttermere today.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 3.40pm and 27 volunteer team members were involved in the operation.

The Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the scene and the aircraft’s doctor and paramedic treated the woman at the scene.

Mountain rescue team members stretchered the walker to the helicopter and she was flown to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle for further treatment.
