The Buckden Pike dog during his visit to the vet's

The woman who is looking after the emaciated dog rescued from a Yorkshire Dales fell is appealing for animal lovers to help stump up to pay for his treatment.

The unnamed dog was stretchered from Buckden Pike on Sunday after a walker reported seeing it near a memorial cross at an aircraft crash site on the 702m (2,303ft) hill.

Members of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association carried the dog for more than a mile and he was taken to kennels in Grassington.

The dog was taken to a vet by Helen Coates of the Dog People where it was found to have a badly broken front leg. It is possible the leg may have to be amputated.

Ms Coates said: “Well done and thank you to the members of the UWFRA who took the time to rescue this poor lurcher-Saluki lad from Buckden Pike yesterday.

“He’s at the vet’s at the moment with a badly broken front leg. He’s dehydrated and emaciated.

“Fingers crossed he’ll be coming home to us tomorrow.

“Although money is no object when it comes to the life of a dog, if he survives, he’s going to need some major treatment.

“If any of you can spare anything to help this dog, please contact me or UWFRA.

“Any donations, big or small will be gratefully received.

“Keep everything crossed for him, please.”

Eight members of the Grassington-based rescue team brought the dog from the fell.

Team leader Andy Jackson said he believed the dog may have been used for rabbiting as it had scars on its face.

A possible lead to the dog’s owner left by a poster on grough turned out to be false.

Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association can be contacted via the team’s website.
