John Burland in his guise as Alfred Wainwright

An aficionado of the late guidebook author Alfred Wainwright is offering his dramatic services to charities and other organisations.

Wainwright Society founder John Burland has performed his presentation of the life of the curmudgeonly fellwalker more than 30 times.

Since its first airing at the Ilkley Literature Festival in West Yorkshire four years ago, the presentation has been seen at venues from Penruddock to Pickering; from Haltwhistle to Hawes.

The performance takes the audience on a journey through Wainwright’s life from his humble upbringing in Blackburn through his life-changing visit to the Lake District in 1930 and then his eventual move to Kendal in 1940 and the 15 years spent writing the pictorial guides between 1952 and 1967.

Mr Burland said: “As a result of these talks, many thousands of pounds have been raised for various charities throughout the North of England and also refugee and children’s charities abroad.”

He said if any groups or charitable organisations wish to book him for a talk in either the spring or autumn of 2014 to raise funds for both themselves and Mr Burland’s chosen charities, they should contact him by email or by ringing 07725 434036.
