The walker got lost on the fells overlooking Easedale Tarn

Rescuers warned of the dangers of not going adequately equipped while walking in the mountains after they had to guide a man to safety when he got lost.

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was alerted today after the man, walking alone, reported himself lost between Langdale and Grasmere.

A team spokesperson said: “It proved very difficult to locate him, but eventually we worked out where he was.”

His position was pinpointed to the fells near Tarn Crag, overlooking Easedale Tarn.

The rescue team spokesperson said: “With some guidance by phone he was able to find a way down to Grasmere before it went dark. This was a little unfortunate, because he’d parked his car in Langdale.”

The walker was almost entirely reliant on his smartphone for finding his way, the team said.

“A smartphone, and the torch and a photo of a map from a book stored on the same phone don’t constitute adequate navigation equipment,” the spokesperson added.
