A walker was airlifted from a long-distance route in the Lake District after injuring her ankle.

The 71-year-old woman was walking on the Allerdale Ramble route near Rosthwaite yesterday when she injured herself.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called out to her aid, and Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was also alerted about 1.45pm.

She was treated at the scene by the helicopter crew and rescue team members then stretchered her to the aircraft, which then flew her to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for further treatment.

Twelve volunteer team members were involved in the rescue, the team’s 96th of the year.
