A pair of walkers using a smartphone for navigation had to be rescued from the Arrochar Alps after its battery died, leaving them stranded.

The two had made the climb to Ben Vorlich on Saturday using the phone’s inbuilt GPS, but became disoriented in winter conditions and unable to find their way off the mountain when the gadget failed.

Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 2.45pm on Saturday and was helped in the major search of the 943m (3,094ft) munro by members of the Police Scotland MRT.

An Arrochar MRT spokesperson said: “The team deployed several parties onto the hill in increasing darkness.

“The missing pair had taken shelter in survival bags and were located high on the mountain.

“They were then slowly assisted down by Arrochar and Police mountain rescue personnel.”
