A walker was airlifted to hospital after slipping and seriously injuring himself on a Lake District fell.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out today about 12.25pm when the man injured his ankle while on steep and craggy ground below the summit of Rannerdale Knotts.

The team found the man and, with the help of a doctor and paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance, treated him at the scene on the fell above Buttermere.

He was then stretchered 150m to the valley from where the helicopter flew him for to hospital for further treatment.

The rescue involved 14 volunteer members of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team.
