Police have discovered more dead birds of prey in an area of the Highlands where six were found earlier this month.

They said the total of dead raptors is now 13, and that tests have confirmed some of them have been poisoned.

Nine red kites and four buzzards have been found dead in an area about two square miles wide to the South-East of Conon Bridge around Conon Brae, Balvail, Leanaig and Alcaig, on the edge of the Black Isle.

Criminal investigations began on Monday, and post-mortem examinations of some of the birds have established the cause of death as poisoning.

A Police Scotland spokesperson appealed to walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts to contact them if they have any information about the deaths.

The spokesperson said: “The presence of poison confirms our early assessment of criminal involvement in the deaths.

“Police Scotland is working in close collaboration with partner agencies, RSPB, SSPCA, Scottish Agricultural College and Science & Advice for Scottish Agriculture.

“Partner agencies would seek to remind members of the public that if anyone finds any further dead birds or animals in the area they are asked to make a note of its location and inform the police on 101.

“Under no circumstances should anyone touch or attempt to recover any dead animal.”

Members of the public can also use the anonymous Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111 or its online site.
