A walker was airlifted from a Snowdonia hillside after slipping and breaking his ankle.

The man, from London, was walking with a friend on the path between Gelli Iago and Bwlch y Battel, east of Beddgelert, yesterday, when he fell.

The walker was unable to put any weight on the ankle, so his companion called for help after obtaining a mobile phone signal.

Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 5.05pm and 14 of its volunteers made their way to the site.

The team requested help from a Sea King search and rescue helicopter at RAF Valley on Anglesey.

An Aberglaslyn MRT spokesperson said: “Four team members were airlifted to the scene, and thanks to a joint effort with the helicopter’s winchman were able to stabilise the male and treat and splint a suspected broken ankle.

“Morphine was also administered to help manage the severe pain and discomfort of the injury.

“The male was later airlifted to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan while the team assisted the male’s friend back down the mountainside to his vehicle.”

The rescue ended about 8pm.
