Mountain rescuers were called out to help in injured fellrunner on a Lakeland hill in the middle of the night.

The 44-year-old was taking part in a long-distance event along the Cumbria Way when she injured her ankle and knee on Great Lingy Hill in the Caldbeck Fells.

A marshal on the event helped her to a shooting hut and Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 2.30am on Sunday morning. Team members treated her at the site then placed her in a casualty bag to keep her warm on the windswept hill.

She was then stretchered down to the disused Carrock Mine, where she was placed in a Land Rover. The injured runner was then taken to a waiting ambulance at the head of Mosedale which took her to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.

The four-hour rescue involved 10 Keswick MRT volunteers.
