A new exhibition in the Lake District tells the story of the first ascent of a Himalayan peak 60 years ago.

The Mountain Heritage Trust is staging the event in Keswick to celebrate the anniversary of the first successful climb by George Band and Joe Brown of Kangchenjunga.

The exhibition, at the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery, also features items from the first Alpine-style lightweight ascent of the mountain without supplementary oxygen by Doug Scott, Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker in 1979.

Organisers said: “The exhibition features many items from both the first ascent and lightweight ascent including clothing worn on the mountain as well as literature, letters home from the mountaineers and video footage.

“Information panels have been strategically placed in glass cases behind the artefacts so visitors can read more about the items and successful ascents of Kangchenjunga. There are also photographs from the first ascent and lightweight ascent as well as a large landscape photograph of Kangchenjunga itself.”

The exhibition was launched by Doug Scott, mountaineer and Mountain Heritage Trust vice-chairman at the Keswick Mountain Festival. The exhibition will run until May 2016.
