Ever felt that dizzy feeling as you risk hyperventilation when you’re trying to inflate your sleep mattress at camp?

Therm-a-Rest would like to introduce you Bernoulli’s principle.

It’s the law of fluid dynamics behind the brand’s new Speed Valve, which effectively ‘entraps’ air surrounding the blown flow and draws in a bigger volume.

In practice, this allows the new NeoAir Camper SV to be inflated three times faster, and with less effort, than a conventional inflatable mattress.

We watched a demonstration at the recent Kendal Outdoor Retail Show and the mattress was near fully inflated with seven gentle breaths into the wide neck of the Speed Valve. There’s no clamping your lips to it either; the valve is held open and you simply blow into the opening.

A roll-top closure then traps the air and you finish the last few bits of inflation with a more conventional secondary valve.

Deflation is rapid too once the main valve is unrolled.

The three-season mattress has 3-inch (7.6cm) WaveCore construction with raised side rails to help keep you in place as you sleep. The NeoAir Camper SV has an insulation r-value of 2.2, so is designed for camping trips when the temperature is not too cool.

Brandon Bowers, category director for mattresses at Therm-a-Rest, said: “The NeoAir Camper SV inflates in a flash, saving campers time, energy and most importantly, their hard-earned breath.

“Best of all, the 3-inch mattress comes with the comfort and quality people expect from Therm-a-Rest.”

The NeoAir Camper SV will come in two sizes: L and XL, weighing 910g and 1,110g respectively, and will sell at £125 for the smaller model, and £140 for the XL size. Both are 196cm long, but the larger one is 76cm wide, with the L size 13cm narrower.

The mattresses will be manufactured in Therm-a-Rest’s Ireland factory and will go on sale in January next year.
